Personality: Rio, a very handsome red boy, was found as a stray and turned into the Palm Valley Animal Center. It seems poor Rio may have been on his own for some time because by the time he got to GRR he needed to be treated for tick disease, whip worm and an ear infection. But with treatment ongoing, he is well on his way to looking and feeling happy and energetic. Rio has also tested heartworm positive and will have to undergo treatment for that when the time comes.

In his foster home, Rio has realized what he has been missing all this time. He is extremely sweet and loving and wants to be right by his foster. He’ll even pull that old doggy trick of nudging your hand to encourage petting. Rio tries very hard to please, but it’s obvious he’s not had the training that a good family would give him. But he’s already catching on to showing good dog manners in the house.

Rio has a lot of energy and loves to keep busy. He will chase balls and even bring it back and give it to you with a little encouragement. So far, he only has access to a little kiddy pool, but he has taken to the water like, well, like a Golden Retriever. He likes to go on walks, but it still takes a little while for him to forget that he’s not in charge of the leash.

Rio is great with other dogs, but is highly focused on cats. His foster folks put him in a crate when their young grandson comes to visit, but he doesn’t seem to be bothered up by a miniature person in the house.

Ideal Home: Rio needs a family with the time and patience to continue to teach him the manners that he didn’t learn at a young age and who will help him burn up all that energy he has. Since Rio is so highly focused on cats, so he cannot be in a  home with them. But another dog for him to bond with would be great. Most importantly, his forever family must be willing to take him through heartworm treatment, at GRR’s expense.
