May 2009: Clifford Myko
Clifford
Success story, May 2009
Clifford is still the greatest—8 yrs.
old and going strong. We have
recommended adopting a dog from a Golden Retriever or Lab rescue organization to
friends all around the country. We
now have 2 kids; Kinsey is 3 1/2 and Jackson is 1 1/2.
Clifford is their constant companion and confidante and has adoring fans
in our friends and family, vets, and strangers from all over the country.
He has even won over my “animals only belong outside” in-laws for the
most part. We moved to Charleston,
South Carolina, last year, and he has adapted to his life near the beach and
marsh with great enthusiasm. People
usually can’t believe that he is 8 when they seem him speeding down the beach to
chase a pelican or other shore bird through waves at the shoreline.
We moved into a neighborhood at the end of a cul-de-sac full of lovable
big rescue dogs and he loves his regular impromptu dog parties.
His best friends are a 125-pounds-of-solid-muscle golden named Chevis (he
looks like a small pony) and a wild 2-year-old Rhodesian Ridgeback mix named
Tucker, and of course, our neighbor Miss Jill, who likes to spoil him with
chewies and new squeaky squirrels (still his favorite toy). Clifford had surgery
a week ago to remove and biopsy three tumors near his tail.
The terrific news is they were three different kinds of BENIGN tumors, so
we look forward to years more love and laughter with our big boy.
THANK YOU!
Take care,
Karen Silcox
My name is Clifford & I was adopted from GRR in June. I quickly became part of my new family and a much adored fixture in the neighborhood. The match couldn’t have been better! I love our daily walks in the park and have made many new friends both furry and human. None of them can believe someone ever gave me up for adoption. I’ve learned to play, fetch, sit, and stay over the past few months. I have a blast when we go to the dog park and now I’ll go in the water, but I’m still not keen on swimming yet. I’ve been a fast learner, especially by running around with my new friends. Mom & Dad have really enjoyed watching me come out of my shell around other dogs. However, I’ve never been shy around people. The vet says I’m up to a healthy 80-85 lbs., have put on some muscles, and have the heart of an athlete…they loved me there too.
We all welcomed my baby sister in August and I have been sooooo good with her. I
nap on her floor and come get our parents whenever she starts crying. Mom & Dad
know that I’m going to be her best friend for years to come. They had a glimpse
when our cousins, ages 8, 6, 3, and 10mths. came to visit and couldn’t get
enough of me! I was so patient with them and flipped over for belly rubs
regularly. We’ve had lots of visitors stay at the house the past few months and
most have threatened to stow me in their suitcase and take me home with them.
My mom & dad really couldn’t be happier with me joining the family. I sleep on
the floor of their room every night and wake them up sometimes because I am a
rather loud dreamer. It is the only time they ever hear me bark… I’m an alpha
dog in my sleep. I love my good rubs before bed & when I wake up in the morning.
I also really enjoy baths and being brushed. We get lots of compliments about
how beautiful I am. My favorite toys are my squeaky bees, my squirrel, and my
rawhide bones.
Thank you GRR for making such a thorough match with my new family…it is like I
have always been a part of it and we are all thrilled.
Can’t wait to see everyone at the Pond in October!
Take care,
Clifford, Andy, Karen, & Kinsey Silcox
Clifford...
Hello! My name is Clifford, and I am a big red dog! Well, I am really not as big
as the dog in the children’s books, but my heart is probably as big. I have been
doing great since I arrived at my foster home a few weeks ago. I can’t even tell
you how much I LOVE being inside with a family! I was kept outside at my former
home. I used to be a cute, furry puppy, but I grew and wanted attention. My
previous family didn’t know what to do with me (and truth to tell, some of them
didn’t really like big dogs), so they put me outdoors. When they came out to see
me, I got so excited that they decided I was boisterous, hyper, and “too wild,”
but I have not been any of those things in my foster home. As a matter of fact,
I learned “sit” in only 3 days, and I always sit before you pet me. I have even
learned to walk on a leash without pulling. We are working on “come” right now.
I am a fast learner! I have overheard my foster Mom telling many people what a
great dog I am and how smart I am. I am starting to believe her! I adore the
kids in my foster home, and I am most content when they are all around me. I
just love kids and would love to have a forever home with children.
I need to let you know that I really do not like thunderstorms at all. They
frighten me a great deal! Thank heavens I am inside with my people when those
storms hit, though—it was way more scary when I was all alone outdoors. I am
also adjusting to being in a crate. If I am outside with you, I will make sure
that I come inside with you, too. That way I know I will not be left outside
alone again, and besides, I really want to be with you wherever you are!
I am currently living with a cat. Sometimes I find her very interesting, and at
other times I couldn’t care less if she is in the room. But as for those
squirrels outside … well, if you need an official squirrel chaser in your yard,
I am your man! I am also sharing my new home with another dog. She has taught me
a few things about house manners, and I am happy to report that I like other
dogs and am always happy to meet a new canine friend. You will be so impressed
with me!
I was too skinny when I moved in with my foster family, but I have put on a few
pounds and am looking nearly “ideal,” if I do say so myself. All in all, I am a
big, handsome, reddish, 70-pound Golden who just wants to be loved and to be
part of a family. I am so eager to please and am so grateful for any love that
comes my way. I promise to return that love in more ways than you can imagine!

Shasta/Myko
May, 2009:
I am writing you this letter to tell you about my life in my Forever Home. I am so excited to be a part of my new family, as they are very fun and loving. And I am so grateful to the folks at GRR that rescued me and took care of me until I could get to my Forever Home.
I have a sister named Sandy who is a 9-year old Golden. She is very wise in her years and a very calming spirit to be around. She laughs at me because she thinks I am silly – which is good because I am keeping her young.
I also have a BFF (that stands for Best Friends Forever). Her name is Dakota. We love to wrestle and chase each other around the backyard, and the couches in the living room make a great agility course as well.
My mom takes such good care of me. We enjoy walks at the local park, car rides, and visiting friends and family. I tried to go swimming last summer, but I am not so sure about that just yet. I need a few more times to practice before I get the hang of it. And yes, I am still loving my belly rubs, which I get a lot of!
Mom has sent me to a couple schools now and I am about to enroll in an advanced course, so I have learned a lot of tricks and commands. I am a good doggie, my mom tells me so.
We also celebrate doggy birthdays and have a doggy birthday cake! My sister and I celebrated our birthdays together this year. The cake sure was yummy!
I love my life and am very appreciative of the people at GRR and my foster family for helping me get to where I belong. Thank you for all you have done for me!
Licks and Sniffs,
Myko
P.S. – Mom changed my name from Shasta to Myko.
2008 Update 6/10
Shasta is doing so well in her foster home! Believe it or not, she’s reliably housebroken already, and doesn’t even need to be crated at night. When she’s home alone during the day, we’ve been leaving her either crated or babygated in the kitchen, and she does great either way.
She’s wonderful with children and has been around kids from the ages of 14 months to 12 years old. She’s gentle, loving, sweet, playful… just wants her belly rubbed (by anyone and everyone!). She doesn’t jump much; when she does, it’s mostly from excitement when we get home.
Shasta enjoys her doggie foster brothers. They frolic and have fun just running around, playing chase, etc. She retrieves in a playful way, loves to go get whatever you throw and even brings it back most of the time. She rides great in the car, just cuddles up in somebody’s lap for the trip. She does need leash work (she is only a puppy!).. she’ll walk a little and then sit down. Sometimes I end up carrying her! She’s getting used to the pool but isn’t ready to swim laps yet.
For such a young pup, Shasta is surprisingly calm and gentle. She can be shy at first but warms up real fast. She knows her name already! If you love giving tummy rubs and you’re looking for a sweet girl who is a dedicated cuddler, you are sure to adore Miss Shasta.
Somehow, this little blondie wound up stray and in the pound. Luckily, she was spotted by one of our shelter pals, who alerted us & won her an early release… and Shasta was soon on her way to the vet’s, and then on to her foster home. She was timid at first, but soon perked up… and she LOVES snuggling on your lap! Watch this space for more updates.
