Kate
Update: 11/09/09:
Captivating Kate is all ready to find her forever home. This beautiful girl has energy galore. She likes to play with balls and chew toys. She plays well with other dogs. She LOVES attention! She enjoys clambering up on couch or bed to keep you company, and she’d definitely sit in your lap if you’d let her.
She’s trustworthy loose in the house when alone, though we do close the bedroom and bathroom doors (she enjoys shredding Kleenex fished out of the trash!). She enjoys children – licks them and will let them pet her. We’re working on the jumping up – Kate is definitely not shy!
Kate would do well with someone who’s home a lot or has other dogs. She doesn’t really like being alone… when she goes outdoors, she does her business and then immediately wants to come in. (And her new family should be aware that when Kate is a little nervous and just settling in, she’ll “sing” for a while! Never fear, once she calms down the concert comes to a close.)
Pretty Kate is all ready to be your new best friend!
Update: 11/01/09:
Pretty Kate is calming down in foster care. She’s a real snuggler, listens well, and gets on great with other dogs. No more problems with “opera singing” – she has decided that cuddling is definitely preferable to carrying on! She’s been fine left loose in the house when nobody is home, too. We did find out that she doesn’t like storms, but she doesn’t get destructive – just stays close and tries to go under the bed if she can.
She walks surprisingly well on lead. Walks are a pleasure. She’s just a great Golden and she’s almost ready to find her forever family!
When Kate and her partner Will appeared at the pound, we saw their pictures and figured someone would soon be reclaiming the handsome pair. After all, they were wearing name tags, rabies tags, even microchip tags. But when the owner was contacted, he decided to surrender his Goldens to the shelter—the reclaim fee was more than he wanted to pay ($150 per dog, since not only were the two running loose, but they weren’t altered—in fact, Kate was in heat). We did find out that Will and Kate were either brother and sister, a breeding pair, or both! – and that they had lived as outdoor dogs and had never been apart. Will turned out to have heartworms, but amazingly, Kate is HW negative!
Getting used to a brand-new indoor life without your long-time partner can be pretty stressful. Not to mention learning to go into a crate. Kate “sang” all the way from the shelter into Austin: “What’s happening? Where are we going? I don’t like this crate! Yikes, this car noise is scary! Who are all these new people? Help, I’m confused!” The poor girl didn’t know which end was up. But after a vet check, bath, and spay surgery, she began to calm down a bit… and now she’s getting settled into her foster home. Check back for updates as we get to know Kate better!
