Jake

Update 12/07/09:

Attached is a photo of Jake (09-128).  We adopted Jake on November 11th and he has truly enriched our lives.  He is sweet, smart and at times pretty goofy.  He loves his walks, thinks his is job to herd the neighborhood deer and to keep the squirrels out of the back yard. He loves his stuffed animals and loves to play.  He eagerly goes in his crate when told to and patiently waits to be let out when we get home.  He loves our other dog, a 14 year old mixed breed, and is gentle most of the time.  Jake's manners are unbelievable given the challenges he faced earlier in his life.  His favorite thing is to be brushed.  He will freeze for as long as you brush him.  Jake's first night of obedience training starts next week and we are sure he will do well.  We appreciate the time GRR spent in matching us with Jake... we feel he the exact dog we were looking for.   We are also very appreciative for Jake's Foster Parents while he underwent his Heartworm treatment. We will keep you posted.  Thanks for everything.

Update:09/19/09

Jake is halfway through his heartworm treatment and counting the days until the activity restrictions come off, which will be right around October 21. It’s hard being a bouncy, silly, playful youngster when you can’t just let it rip and run around full tilt. However, good things come to dogs who wait, and Jake’s turn to party will come soon enough!

Meanwhile, Jake’s foster dad is working on his training – he is learning not to jump up, and polishing off his house-training skills. He already sleeps great through the night, takes treats nicely, and gets on well with other dogs. “He’s a really good dog! Very smart and wants to please. He is cute as a button and very personable.”

Jake is available now to the family who is willing to finish up his heartworm restriction. Others will just have to get in line for late October!

What a knockout! Talk about movie-star looks. This handsome blond hunk came to GRR from a shelter up north, after a sharp-eyed volunteer spotted him: “I bailed him out before he could be euthed and immediately sent him to the vet’s.  He had his neuter surgery, vaccs and HW test today. Unfortunately, he is HW positive. Was brought in as a stray.”  She also told us that he was a skinny guy and had a huge “collar cut” on his neck, where a too-tight chain collar, doubtless put on when he was a pup and never removed, had grown right into his skin. The vet removed it and carefully cleaned and medicated the wound. It’s healing nicely.

Jake has only just moved into his foster home and is settling in:

He did very well in his crate last night. He didn't want to be there (of course)—he wanted to be with us—but he did calm down and slept through the night. He marked a couple of times, but he may be house-trained? We’ll see! So far, we have been taking him out a lot. Stairs were new to him, but he is figuring them out. Same with getting

in and out of a car. Overall, his house behavior has been pretty good! He is going to get adopted quickly when he is done with his treatment.

More details as we get to know handsome Jake better!
