Remembered

Our family sadly report that Cranberry has passed on. We adopted her in Feb, 2001 and we have had 8 1/2 glorious years with her! She has been the best dog ever! She died on October 25, 2008. Her health had been declining this past year and ultimately reduced her quality of life. She first became deaf and would only respond to commands if she was looking at you.  Then she developed a problem with her vision  and possible  problem with her nose as she could not pick up a sent of "people food" treat right under her nose, let alone see it.  She became unable walk on our tile and wood floors as she would slip and fall and would be unable to get up. Before we realized what a huge problem this would become for her, she would "woof" to get our attention to get up. Then we would help her up to her feet to go out side to do her business. That escaladed to intermittent boughts of diarrhea and weight loss and lots of Vet visits and confinement to our breakfast area behind a baby gait (area rugs provide for mobility) with our other canine friend, Jade, a lab/dalmation mix for company. She gave life to Cranberry! They loved to play together until Cranberry's health prevented it. By Sept 2008, Cranberry refused her regular dry dog food, to mixed with canned food, to just canned dog food. She continued to lose weight. By this time, we let Cranberry eat what ever she wanted to try to put weight on her. I'm sure this did not help her problem with diarrhea, but we were desperate! The last few weeks before we had to put her down, she was not able to control her bowels well and continued to lose weight and had to confine her to the outdoors with her buddy 24/7(except for rainy days). As a family we had to decide Cranberry's fate as her quality of life had quickly declined.  We would have preferred she make that decision to pass away on her own rather than for us to make it for her. It was a painful decision for us to make, but we felt she was suffering too much. We love you Cranberry, and you will be greatly missed!!!

Cranberry is  3-4 years old, 65 lbs with a very lovely red, soft coat and an even lovelier personality.  She is so sweet and tolerated everything we did to her just fine.  She was even great while being groomed in a car at the shelter.  We wanted to get her all spiffed up for her new foster home.  She even did great with her bath  - she was very content and seemed to enjoy being fussed over and made pretty.

She was fine with Magnolia and fine with my kids (for the short time she was here.)  She will sit next to you for pets, but also needs to learn not to put her paws on you for attention.  She likes to give you her paw to shake.  She is quite spry; and able to get in and out of the Excursion by herself very easily.  She appears to know quite a few commands and is housebroken.   Watch for more as we get to know her better.
