Remembered...

General at approximately nine years old, The General comes to us from Houston.  He was scheduled to be put to sleep by a shelter right before Christmas.  The staff at the shelter loved him so much, they delayed his execution, and staff members took him home on weekends until a place in rescue could be found.  He knows how to sit and stay, fetch, and is quite active for his age.  He is good with children, dogs and cats.   Check back for better pictures and vet & foster home updates, as we admit him into GRR.

An update from his foster home:

General is very well behaved.  He gets along great with my two other GRR dogs, and they even share toys together.  He's a very big dog who needs to put on a little weight, we've been feeding him and taking him on walks with the other dogs.  His spirit for a nine year old is great, he has lots of energy!  He also knows how to settle down when it's time to be calm and quiet.  He is currently heartworm positive, we have him scheduled for heartworm therapy.  I suspect once that is taken care of he will be in top health!

“Tonight General proved he was the older, wiser and smarter dog of the group.  Not only did he happily walk around 4 miles of Town Lake, plus the additional mile home, he has shown his "retriever" ability.

“General brings the ball back and drops it in your lap, no surprise.  But then he gets the rope pull.  He brings it over to you and drops it.  My two younger dogs will not even touch it and are amazed.  Tonight we were throwing the ball from the living room to the kitchen saying, "Ernie will get it because he is faster..."  Definitely true, Ernie does get there first, but General is much quicker to grab and retrieve as Ernie looks on.  It's great!  For nine years old I am quite amazed at his capacity as a dog.  If I didn't already have two he would definitely be my "second".

2/1/01 Update after his neuter:

Poor General, his "cone head" (special collar so he can’t get at his stitches)  looks so abused!  I'm actually glad he has it on because he has learned how to bang into things, back up a few feet and try again!  He is a great dog.  Just hope the vet doesn't charge us for a dented up cone once we are done.  I keep having to move it around so it gets dented equally on all sides...  For an older dog who just had a “delicate” surgery, he sure is active!  I'd be quiet and depressed... but not General!  He is a great dog.  Now just he has to ‘charge’ through his heartworm treatment and he will be all ready to go to his new forever “command assignment”.

02/02/01 Update:

Tonight was his first "kong" filled with cheese, peanut butter and some snack bones.  He loved it.  Though I think he liked carrying it around more than trying to get the peanut butter out of the center.  He's so active for a dog his age and he's got such a warm heart.   He doesn't like being in his "crate" much, and will be happy to be in a permanent home in the future.  He does great around kids, elderly and other dogs, and loves to please, just don't leave something on the counter or he will snatch it when you aren't looking, because he would NEVER do that when you are around!

02/17/01 Update:

Today was play at the ranch day and swim in the creek.  General had a blast swimming and fetching sticks.  He would stick his head under the water to find the stick, and hold his breath for more than 15 seconds before coming back up.
